How shifting from memorization to conceptual understanding changes everything about how students experience mathematics.

Number sense — the ability to think flexibly about numbers — develops through understanding, not memorization. Students with strong number sense can:
- Break numbers apart and combine them in useful ways
- Estimate reasonably before calculating
